Shifting influences among stakeholders has caused leaders to consider new ways of managing their organizations and navigating through a very different and ever-changing world. This book demonstrates to leaders that purpose can be the driving force behind this new management style and also provide a competitive advantage in their markets. The book offers two fundamental concepts that when embraced and practiced authentically, can be transformative for organizational success.
  • First, one must look at an organization strategically as if operating inside of its own stakeholder world. This stakeholder world is represented by the many individuals and groups of individuals who impact, or are impacted by, the organization.
  • Second, to ensure an organization's long-term success, pursuing purposeful behavior is the best practice for managing stakeholder value inside its stakeholder world. Purposeful behavior means taking actions that are consistent or aligned with a purpose that is meaningful and important to all the organization’s stakeholders.

Insightful and practical book. I'd recommend it to anyone looking at a different way to build a lasting organization. Especially, if one is interested in building a business with criteria for success goes beyond profits.

This is one of these books that's ahead of it time because the idea of being purposeful in business, though adopted by companies we may already know, is not yet a mainstream way of doing business. This book builds on the body of work related to the idea that not only is it possible to build lasting businesses that matter, thrive, and do good, but the shift into being purposeful, while adopting a different management style that reflects the purposefulness of the business, can yield benefits that go beyond profits and benefit all that the business is meant to serve, as well as impact.

    Great reference book.

Thriving in a Stakeholder World Purpose As the New Competitive Advantage Paul Ratoff 9781941870372 Books Reviews

This is a great read for business owners, CEOs and other C-level executives of mid market businesses. The author, Paul Ratoff pushes the point that the purpose of the business must be well defined and shared with all of your stakeholders. This is a reminder to closely examine the stakeholders in your business because they will change over time. While Paul acknowledges the given metrics of sales and profits he pushes the point that a business with a well defined purpose and stakeholders versed in the purpose will create a more successful business. Well said.
This is a very insightful and informative book for the appropriate reader. It recognizes business for adopting a new more socially oriented agenda in contrast to the traditional business concern solely for shareholder profits. The book endorses a more socially responsible business community and provides a road map for implementation. The book explains how to recognize those entities or individuals influencing or influenced by a business and defines them as STAKEHOLDERS. The book then explains how to manage the business in a manner best serving the interests of all the Stakeholders. The Author is intelligent and perceptive. The book requires some focus and can read like a text book at times. It clearly presents a sense of optimism for American business. However, don't expect it to read like a novel.
This is a much needed book for the strategy field. Purposeful behavior and a multiple, stakeholder perspective (that goes beyond shareholders and customers) are two core concepts for truly effective development and deployment of strategy. In this book, Paul uses his vast experience to clear outline what, why, and how to manage organizations for the effective achievement of purpose and competitive advantage. Very well-written and structured, the core concepts are clear and pragmatic, and I especially like the cases examples in each chapter of section two which clearly demonstrate multiple ways to achieve the principles, and the bullet summaries at the end of each chapter are a great review of the key concepts. I highly recommend this book for both new and veteran practitioners as a resource before your next complex organizational intervention.
Paul Ratoff's book fills an important need in organizational planning the recognition that a clear focus on an organization's purpose provides a useful context in which other important decisions can be assessed. Aligning strategies with actions and balancing the needs of competing groups to create win-win results are major challenges, and this book offers practical methods and perspectives for approaching those tasks, and more. The value of a broad purpose is clearly explained. Moreover, the discussion of the relationship of purpose to an organization's culture helps clarify many impediments to effective performance. This book is well written and easy to understand. It's clear that the author has put a lot of constructive thought into this topic and bases his recommendations on extensive personal experience. As explained in the book, purpose gives meaning to action, inspires involvement, and improves productivity. If inspiration and effective action are important to you and your organization, read this book.
This book is just ripe for the times we live in as its concepts fit like a glove with today's financial technology to make win-win results possible.
In reading the book, I discovered a new world where organization can grow, thrive and fulfill it's purpose. In what I thought could be difficult reading, I found Paul's book clear, easy to read and on point. I have a new appreciation now for what is possible for organizations making a real difference and fulfilling their purpose.
Much of the current work on purpose in organizations is philosophical and theoretical. Paul does an exceptional job of making purpose practical and actionable in organization. This is a great guidebook for organizations looking to adopt what Paul calls "purposeful organizational behavior."
Insightful and practical book. I'd recommend it to anyone looking at a different way to build a lasting organization. Especially, if one is interested in building a business with criteria for success goes beyond profits.
